Grit Under the Eyelid is a new map involving the exploration of crumbling tombs that I put together for Quake with Arcane Dimensions 1.8 Patch 1, and is my first solo release.

Originally, I intended to finish this for Rotting Jam last year, but I didn’t get around to completing it in time. So instead, I expanded upon it and focused a bit more on detailing. Makkon also updated their texture set between then and now, and so I also spent time updating it with the new stone textures. This is also one of those cases where I got caught up in detailing over anything else.

One of my initial inspirations for this map was the Desert of the Knarren from Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc, especially with the combination of green acid with red rocks and sand. The idea also influenced the gameplay somewhat, with an abundance of shamblers taking the place of the knaaren. Visually, it’s also inspired by my own visits to southern Utah, especially around Zion National Park.

There are 11 secrets in total, with an inclusion of story books. There isn’t a ton of writing here, but I mostly had the idea of a past explorer or expedition leaving notes behind about a toxic, infested land.

The map can be downloaded on Slipseer. Requires Arcane Dimensions 1.8 Patch 1 and a copy of Quake to play.
