I hosted the Quake Christmas Jam for 2024! This one was themed around simply implementing the jump boots into a map, using the Arcane Dimensions mod.

Everyone had about two weeks to put a gameplay map together. When the event ended (Dec. 7 – Dec. 21), there were 9 complete maps, including my own.

This was my first experience building a start map in Arcane Dimensions. It was a bit of a learning experience, since there are quite a few differences from Alkaline. The hardest part was figuring out a system for resetting items on the player, since the variable settings I was used to didn’t quite take. Thankfully, I got a tip working out many of the kinks, which ended up in a patch a couple hours after the initial release.

Since I didn’t leave myself a lot of time to put the start map together, its own look shares a lot with my map, complete with the prefabs I put together for archways, doors, and other miscellaneous decorations. Since the focus is on the jump boots, I relied on them for navigation to the different portals, as well as the difficulty selection.

There was a lot of creativity on display here from everyone involved, with the most unique in my mind being Riktoi’s approach, which involved mechanics around ice (or disguised air strafe movement). SZE’s map also deserves special mention, with the swapping between ice and lava-covered worlds.
